In the framework of the Youth Fund program, established by Eurasia Partnership Foundation and supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, a series of activites were held for Youth Fund members in 8 regions of Azerbaijan (Ganja, Qazakh, Aghstafa, Tovuz, Shamkir, Samux, Yevlax, Goygol) in March-May of 2011. In total 23 projects have been implemented by 63 participants and beneficiaries living in the mentioned territories.
Samukh Youth Fund, established by EPF in the framework of its Youth Fund program, conducted seminar for 30 young people of Samukh. The goal of the Project is to raise awareness among youth of Samukh rayon on early marriages, violence against women, its implications, and ways to prevent problems associated with them. The seminar brought the issue of early marriages and violence against women in Azerbaijan to the forefront of discussions, presenting an opportunity for youth to get to know measures and policies necessary for combating violence against women in the country.
Getting familiar with the subject, the participants got involved in group works and role-playing games. Taking into consideration that topics like these are tabooed making an obstacle for discussion, YF helped participants to break this taboo at least among them and enable them to openly discuss this kind of issues. The participants shared their experiences and the stories they have heard or witnessed. They also emphasized the importance of awareness and efforts aimed at combating early marriages and violence against women.
The project also aims to inform the rural population about early marriages and violence against women. In order to attract the attention of local population, Samukh YF addressed the population with specifically tailored campaigns and introduced to the local population the prevalence, roots and consequences of domestic violence in Azerbaijan. In addition, in order to sustain the undertaken efforts, Samukh YF provided TOT for young people in villages, so that each village would have one trainer specialized on the issue.
